The IRS has officially confirmed that Direct File, the free federal tax-filing system tested earlier this year, will not be available next tax season.
In an email sent to state officials, the agency stated that the pilot program will not be continued in its current form.
Why Direct File Is Ending
Direct File was launched as a government-run alternative to the private tax software industry.
The system allowed taxpayers to file their federal returns online directly through the IRS website completely free.
While millions supported the idea, the pilot program covered only limited situations, and the IRS says it needs more time and evaluation
before deciding whether a long-term platform will be built.
Will You Still Be Able to File Taxes?
Yes. The discontinuation of Direct File does not mean taxpayers cannot file taxes.
You can still use:
- IRS Free File (with partner companies)
- TurboTax
- H&R Block
- Certified tax preparers and CPAs
- VITA free tax clinics
The only change is that the IRS’s direct filing tool will not return this year.
What It Means for Taxpayers
For taxpayers hoping for a simple, government-run filing system, the decision is disappointing.
However, the IRS has hinted that a new digital tax experience may be in development,
to be announced later.
In the meantime, taxpayers should prepare to return to traditional filing options when
the 2026 tax season begins in January.
