Yet measuring that interest isn’t perfect: false positives count subscribers whose reported opens don’t reflect real engagement, while false negatives exclude still-interested subscribers whose clicks are outdated.

Good list hygiene removes the obviously unengaged. But a marketer can do more.

As described here, ecommerce email delivery is for bulk sends, such as marketing messages or content-driven newsletters. It is not for transactional messages, although list hygiene for bulk sends can apply to the same sending domain.

Base Segment

Email-list hygiene starts with sending consistent campaigns to engaged subscribers. Sending bulk emails only to interested recipients almost always produces higher open rates and generally puts the message in the inbox rather than a promotions tab or spam folder.

An “engaged” segment typically includes subscribers who recently clicked, opened, or joined the list. For example, a merchant sending a weekly email newsletter might set up a base sending segment of subscribers who:

Signed up in the past 30 days,

Opened in the last 45 days,

Clicked within the last 90 days.

Subscribers who fall outside the base sending segment and can enter a reactivation or sunset process.

Here are common base sending segments.

Cadence

Signup Window

Open Window

Click Window

Daily

10 days

30 days

60 days

Weekly

30 days

45 days

90 days

Monthly

60 days

90 days

120 days

Open Bloat

Unfortunately, an email “open” does not mean a recipient read the message.

For example, Apple Mail Privacy Protection can load email content automatically, producing an apparent open without a corresponding human action. Other email privacy and security systems are similar. Hence some in the industry now describe email open rates as a vanity metric.

Because a portion of email opens is likely non-human interactions, unengaged subscribers can stay on the list, leading to “open bloat.”

Consider a daily newsletter subscriber who apparently opened yesterday but has not clicked any of the past 40 issues. The open keeps the subscriber in a 60/30/10 base segment despite evidence that the person is not interacting.

Thus open bloat often correlates with low click rates.

Solving Open Bloat

The solution is to exclude the bloat. Marketers can create a second, dynamic segment made up of subscribers who apparently opened within the past week but have never clicked.

Excluding this group produces a predictable outcome.

Send volume falls,

Reported open rates typically decline proportionally to the open bloat segment,

Absolute click count almost always remains unchanged.

The same number of clicks from fewer sends raises the click rate. That improvement is more than cosmetic. Bulk senders are no longer repeatedly sending messages to recipients whose only evidence of engagement is an automated open.

Many deliverability practitioners believe this tactic — solving false positives — will increase the percentage of messages that reach the active inbox rather than being rejected, quarantined, or filtered into spam.

Lost Clickers

The parameters of a base sending segment arbitrarily define “engaged” subscribers.

Thus a weekly newsletter using the 30/45/90 segment classifies subscribers as unengaged if they clicked or opened 91 or 46 days ago, respectively.

Such subscribers would have received roughly 13 newsletters since the last click, suggesting waning interest. These lost clickers could be a separate 91-150 day segment to test.

The key is whether the added segment produces incremental clicks without increasing complaints or weakening deliverability.

In short, segmenting for open bloat removes subscribers whose engagement may be false. Lost-clicker segments restore subscribers whose older engagement was real.

The goal of email deliverability is to ensure messages reach recipients’ inboxes, avoiding spam folders…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-81686","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-journal
["GET
