The impact is industry-wide.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, Prime Day is much smaller than Black Friday and Cyber Monday in scale, scope, and breadth. But it has changed the annual retail calendar.<\/p>\n<h3>Prime Day<\/h3>\n<p>In 2025, for example, U.S. industry-wide ecommerce sales hit $24.1 billion during Amazon\u2019s event, a 30.3% year-over-year increase, <a href=\"https:\/\/business.adobe.com\/blog\/prime-day-event-drove-24-billion-in-online-spend-across-us-retailers\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to Adobe.<\/p>\n<p>While Amazon did not disclose its Prime Day results, several sources estimate the company\u2019s sales at approximately $13 billion, or just over half of the total.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s decisions over the years to extend the Prime Day period contributed to its growth, from 24 hours in 2015 to 4 days last year.<\/p>\n<p>When launched in 2015, the event rewarded Prime members with limited-time discounts during a typically quiet sales period. Owing to marketing, deep discounts, and consistency, Prime Day now leads shoppers to postpone purchases to that period.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1564309\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1564309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amazon\u2019s 2015 web page promoting the first Prime Day. <em>Image: GeekWire.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Rest of Ecommerce<\/h3>\n<p>The clearest evidence of Prime Day\u2019s influence is competitors\u2019 reactions: many have mimicked the sale.<\/p>\n<p>A week after Amazon released the dates for Prime Day 2026, Walmart scheduled its <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.walmart.com\/news\/2026\/06\/09\/walmart-deals-returns-june-22-through-28-2026\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Walmart Deals<\/a> event to overlap (June 22 to 28).<\/p>\n<p>Target announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.target.com\/l\/target-circle-deal-days\/-\/N-7196o\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Circle Deal Days<\/a> for June 23 to 26. Members of Target\u2019s Circle360 get early access on the 22nd.<\/p>\n<p>Best Buy, warehouse clubs, apparel chains, home improvement stores, and countless direct-to-consumer brands will launch similar promotions.<\/p>\n<p>Those businesses are not merely reacting to Amazon. They are responding to consumers who will compare products across AI, search engines, marketplaces, brand websites, and social media.<\/p>\n<p>The result is something larger than Prime Day itself, a new ecommerce shopping season with increased traffic, heightened purchase intent, and concentrated promotional activity.<\/p>\n<p>For merchants, the season impacts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/category\/management\/inventory\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inventory purchases<\/a>, advertising budgets, staffing, and merchandising calendars months in advance. Black Friday requires retailers to prepare throughout the fall. Prime Day is having a similar effect.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers schedule product launches around the event. Merchants negotiate promotional funding with vendors. Marketers reserve ad budgets for June and July. Even businesses that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/ditch-the-discount-says-brand-marketer\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never discount<\/a> may adjust content calendars and email schedules to capitalize on increased shopping.<\/p>\n<h3>Opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>Amazon captures the lion\u2019s share of Prime Day sales while enterprise sellers such as Walmart, Target, and Best Buy also benefit.<\/p>\n<p>But ecommerce SMBs enjoy opportunities, too. Consumers, after all, are \u201cprimed\u201d to spend money, searching for alternatives and specialized products and services.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity is not to undercut Amazon or Walmart, but rather to benefit from the activity with tactics such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unique categories that outperform discounts.<\/li>\n<li>Complementary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/test-product-bundles-to-boost-profits\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">product bundles<\/a> that preserve margins and increase average order value.<\/li>\n<li>Exclusive or private-label items that eliminate direct price comparisons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Marketing is key. Email campaigns, SMS messages, paid search, paid social, and retargeting all benefit from heightened shopper intent.<\/p>\n<p>Content marketing can focus on buying guides, comparison articles, and recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>The goal isn\u2019t to steal Amazon\u2019s customers.
