Executives typically define the requirements, designers create the layouts, and developers code or implement the components.<\/p>\n<p>AI is upending that process.<\/p>\n<p>Upwards <a href=\"https:\/\/futurumgroup.com\/press-release\/ai-reaches-97-of-software-development-organizations\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">of 97%<\/a> of developers now use AI to plan software implementations and generate code. Increasingly, generative AI is also impacting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/squarespaces-tools-aid-ecommerce-novices\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1564229\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1564229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AI is upending the traditional process of designing and coding ecommerce sites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Website Theming<\/h3>\n<p>The conventional website workflow exists because people needed a way to convert ideas into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/What-HTML5-Means-for-Ecommerce-Merchants\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HTML<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/What-CSS-Means-for-Ecommerce-Merchants\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/What-JavaScript-Means-for-Ecommerce-Merchants\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JavaScript<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/plain-english-guide-to-shopify-liquid\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liquid<\/a> (used for Shopify), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/ask-an-expert-what-is-reactjs\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">React<\/a> (a JavaScript framework), or another programming or templating language.<\/p>\n<p>The workflow goes (went) something like this.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An ecommerce owner or manager has an idea for a visual theme and communicates the concept to a designer.<\/li>\n<li>The designer translates the concept into a visual for developers.<\/li>\n<li>Developers code and assemble the designers\u2019 theme, template, or function.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That handoff from business to design to development creates expense and delay. Once designed, a custom site or component might require weeks of back-and-forth revisions to code responsive layouts, test the interactions, and tweak the visuals.<\/p>\n<h3>AI Translates<\/h3>\n<p>AI tools can expedite the workflow, translating concepts into designs and designs into functional website themes.<\/p>\n<p>Shopify Magic already helps merchants create product descriptions and other content, and is steadily expanding AI-powered capabilities across the platform. Netlify offers AI-assisted development workflows for creating boilerplate websites. Tools such as GitHub Copilot, Vercel\u2019s v0, Bolt.new, and Replit generate functioning interfaces or application code from natural-language prompts.<\/p>\n<p>The common thread is that executives can describe what they want, and AI generates it.<\/p>\n<p>A merchant might ask for \u201ca minimalist outdoor apparel store with oversized photography, earthy colors, and a streamlined checkout,\u201d and AI produces the initial implementation. The better the instructions, the better the outcome.<\/p>\n<h3>AI Infrastructure<\/h3>\n<p>Figma\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.figma.com\/blog\/payload-joins-figma\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">acquisition<\/a> of Payload CMS last year exemplifies this trend.<\/p>\n<p>The companies have not revealed their long-term roadmap, yet the combination suggests a future in which a designer or even a business owner uses Figma\u2019s AI to create a website design and convert it into a production website.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of creating mockups for developers, designers could generate interfaces that translate to working websites. The design becomes the site.<\/p>\n<p>The implications go beyond convenience. When AI can automatically translate layouts into production-ready code, the traditional separation between design and development is gone.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is happening now. Many companies are vibe coding their own tools, components, and sites.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits<\/h3>\n<p>Enterprise-level businesses will likely have the most AI-enabled theming capabilities, but the entire ecommerce industry benefits in at least four ways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stakeholder control. <\/strong>The traditional workflow is inefficient. With AI-aided design and deployment, a stakeholder has direct control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speed. <\/strong>AI-generated web themes are much faster to create. The design and development phases are much shorter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cost. <\/strong>Human labor comprises most of the cost of ecommerce development.
