{"id":78340,"date":"2026-03-09T13:56:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dralysstore.com\/blog\/studies-reveal-ai-citation-clues\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T21:44:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T21:44:51","slug":"studies-reveal-ai-citation-clues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dralysstore.com\/blog\/studies-reveal-ai-citation-clues\/","title":{"rendered":"Studies Reveal AI Citation Clues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>There are no guidelines from ChatGPT, Gemini, and other generative AI platforms on how to appear in their answers.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s recent \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/new-microsoft-retail-ai-guide-echoes-seo\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AEO and GEO<\/a>\u201d guide offered only commonsense tips.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re left with independent research to inform citation optimization tactics. Two recent studies offer helpful takeaways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kevin Indig<\/strong> is an organic search consultant and the former head of SEO for G2, the software review platform. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growth-memo.com\/p\/the-science-of-how-ai-pays-attention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">analyzed<\/a> 1.2 million ChatGPT results, which contained 18,012 citations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Daniel Shashko<\/strong> is a senior search engine optimization specialist with Bright Data, a research firm. He <a href=\"https:\/\/hackmd.io\/@A09fyOMpSD2VYIJodmXHqQ\/r1eJyqthdbe#Platform-by-Platform-Optimisation-Playbook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">studied<\/a> 42,971 citations across 520 queries on six platforms: Grok, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He found that Grok delivered 33 citations per query, while ChatGPT averaged just 1.5. Roughly 70% of Google\u2019s AI Mode and Gemini used citations that included embedded <em>#:~:text=<\/em> fragment, which linked to the exact cited sentence in the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Here are key findings from the studies.<\/p>\n<h3>Optimizing Citations<\/h3>\n<h4>The closer to the top, the better<\/h4>\n<p>Both studies found that the platforms tend to cite answers from the top third of pages.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin\u2019s study found that 44.3% of ChatGPT\u2019s citations originated from the first 30% of the page\u2019s text.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s study revealed that 74.8% of citations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/will-googles-ai-mode-dominate-chatgpt\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI Mode<\/a> and Gemini appeared in the first half of the page, with 46.1% being in the first 30%. (The other four platforms do not link directly to the cited sentence and are not prominent in Daniel\u2019s study.)<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway from both studies is clear: answer the most important question or problem in the first third of your page.<\/p>\n<h4>Emphasize brevity<\/h4>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s study introduced \u201catomic facts,\u201d which he defines as \u201c\u2026 a self-contained, single-claim sentence that makes sense on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For AI Mode and Gemini, Daniel found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sentences of 6 to 20 words accounted for 92.4% of citations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>All citations (100%) were full sentences. No single citation started or ended in the middle of a sentence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, avoid long introductions or unclear or irrelevant dialogue. Get to the point.<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/atomic.labattsimon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">free tool<\/a> tracks the number of \u201catomic facts\u201d on a page.<\/p>\n<h4>No Google overlap<\/h4>\n<p>Daniel found that just 4.5% of AI Mode\u2019s cited domains appear in Gemini, and just 13.2% of Gemini\u2019s domains are in AI Mode.<\/p>\n<p>The two LLMs appear to follow similar patterns in selecting sources, yet the citations are largely unique.<\/p>\n<h4>Citations vs. visibility<\/h4>\n<p>The two studies focus solely on citations, not on general visibility (i.e., unlinked references).
