Please let us know if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feedback<\/a>.\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Dive Brief:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Northern California, Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26218725\/amazon-perplexity-lawsuit-retail-dive.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Perplexity<\/a> to stop its Comet AI agents from accessing Amazon\u2019s e-commerce website in what it alleges to be a covert manner.\u00a0The lawsuit follows a Friday cease and desist letter in which Amazon alleged Perplexity is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/assets.aboutamazon.com\/2d\/47\/6801224e4607900ef4e61a80a319\/2025-10-31-amazon-cease-desist-ltr-to-perplexity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disguising Comet as a Google Chrome browser<\/a>\u201d\u00a0and refusing to identify Comet AI agents when operating in the Amazon Store, making purchases on behalf of users without authorization.<\/li>\n<li>Amazon claims Perplexity\u2019s covert AI agents are in violation of computer fraud and abuse statutes, adding it may be putting the security of customer data at risk, does not allow users to shop for the best prices and allegedly misappropriated Prime membership benefits to users.\u00a0Amazon is requesting compensatory damages and injunctive relief.<\/li>\n<li>Perplexity says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/hub\/blog\/bullying-is-not-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">move from Amazon represents<\/a> a \u201cthreat to user choice\u201d and asserted that Amazon \u201cdoes not believe in your right to hire labor, to have an assistant or an employee acting on your behalf,\u201d per a Tuesday company post.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dive Insight:<\/h3>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s legal move against Perplexity doesn\u2019t appear to be a full indictment against third-party agentic commerce, but moreso an example of how Amazon wants to work with external agents on its own terms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a separate statement on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/company-news\/amazon-perplexity-comet-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon objected to Comet<\/a>\u00a0offering a \u201csignificantly degraded shopping and customer service experience,\u201d something CEO Andy Jassy also stressed on an earnings call last week.<\/p>\n<p>On that call, Jassy <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4835958-amazon-com-inc-amzn-q3-2025-earnings-call-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed excitement about agentic commerce<\/a>, calling out Amazon\u2019s AI agent called Rufus as an indication of its investment in the space. However, he was also open to working with external partners who could maintain a certain customer experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re also having conversations with and expect over time to partner with third-party agents,\u201d Jassy said.\u00a0\u201cAnd today, search engines are a very small part of our referral traffic, and third-party agents are a very small subset of that. But I do think that we will find ways to partner. We have to find a way, though, that makes the customer experience good. Right now, I would say the customer experience is not. There&#8217;s no personalization, there&#8217;s no shopping history, the delivery estimates are frequently wrong, the prices are often wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it relates to Perplexity\u2019s AI shopping agents, Amazon said it has repeatedly asked the tech company to remove Amazon from the Comet experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think it\u2019s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions whether or not to participate,\u201d the mass e-commerce company said in its Tuesday statement.<\/p>\n<p>Perplexity contends that users\u2019 Amazon login credentials are stored securely when in use by Comet and that \u201cAmazon should love\u201d Comet\u2019s ability to easily purchase products and compare options for shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Amazon doesn\u2019t care,\u201d Perplexity said in its post.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re more interested in serving you ads, sponsored results, and influencing your purchasing decisions with upsells and confusing offers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The battle between both companies comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/retail-ai-chatbot-consumers\/803573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retailers bet big on generative AI<\/a> to streamline operations.
